Bingo Lingo
Since the 1960′s bingo has gone from strength to strength in the UK, with bingo halls up and down the country bringing people and communities together and offering cash prizes. However many people are daunted that they won’t be able to keep up because of the phrases being used which range from rhyming slang to metaphorical meanings.
When there is the possibility of over 90 phrases being shouted in your direction, your friends are chatting away in your other ear and you have to mark your numbers off your card. It can be quite a fast moving and high energy experience. By learning some of the lingo before you go and play bingo you can take away a little of the uncertainty away and concentrate on enjoying your night!
Some of the phrases can be guessed, the nice easy ones such as ‘All the sevens’ for 77 are self explanatory. Even lingo such as ‘Clean the floor’ for 54 are easy because of them sounding like the number when said out loud. But what about when they are slightly more obscure?!
Many of the metaphorical meanings behind the lingo hold biblical or traditional origins:
Number 23, is referred to as ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ – this is because of Psalm 23 in the bible…
Number 26, is ‘Bed and Breakfast’. In times gone by traditional prices for bed and breakfasts were 2 shillings and 6 pence. If only that was still the case!
Number 9 is known as ‘Doctors orders’, this goes back to army days when soldiers were given a pill called number 9 which was in fact a laxative.
Bingo sayings have become synonymous with the game and for good reason. They offer an entertaining twist to a game that is essentially reading numbers out. These bingo sayings have also escaped from the game and are often used in normal conversation, almost like the bingo players cockney rhyme!
It has to be said one of my favourites is:
‘Dancing Queen’, this is from the ABBA song for number 17.
Not only because it is clear what it is, but it leaves a song in your head that will continue to go round and round until you hear another!
Online bingo is experiencing a high level of growth, it offers an experience where people are able to get together from the comfort of their own homes and chat in bingo forums, write bingo reviews and a chance to win cash prizes.
